Couldn’t fall asleep so I did a rough calculation on my iPad, using the notability app, of how much stuff it would take to build a Dyson sphere around earth orbit. If I’m not too tired to do this (its 3 am) and my numbers are reasonable, it came out to the mass of 100 earth size planets! I assumed the density of the sphere to be same as concrete (2000 kg/m^3) and its thickness to be about a 100m. Those were rough numbers that may completely not make sense from a structural rigidity stand point and I’m sure they don’t. But it’s still fun to imagine that if we wanted to make a Dyson sphere around earth orbit we’d first have to colonize and mine probably close to a thousand earth sized planets!
1 - this is a really good project, and if i wasn’t poor i’d support it.
2 - they’re making a space suit. But you need to pledge the highest amount ($10,000) to get said suit. Anything below is really just trinkets.
3 - this is possibly the worst produced video on kick starter or anywhere else.
4 - its fully funded!
